Non Ablative Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is non-ablative skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic treatment that uses laser (thermal) energy to rejuvenate the appearance of your skin. It reduces the appearance of lines, scars, and blemishes either by removing damaged layers of skin to reveal younger-looking skin beneath or stimulating collagen production. There are two different types of laser skin resurfacing: ablative and non-ablative.

Ablative laser resurfacing actually wounds your skin, removing the outermost layers of tissue to reveal newer, healthy tissue below. Ablative laser therapies include carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers and erbium lasers.

Non-ablative laser skin resurfacing does not remove or damage layers of skin, but rather, the treatment stimulates new collagen production and tightens your skin from beneath the surface. There are several different types of non-ablative laser treatments, including intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies. Non-ablative laser resurfacing is less invasive than ablative treatments and requires less downtime after a session.

What conditions does non-ablative skin resurfacing treat?

Non-ablative laser therapy treatments are an excellent method of improving the appearance of:

    Age spots and sun damage
    Wrinkles and lines
    Uneven skin tone
    Dull skin texture
    Acne scars

With most laser skin resurfacing treatments, plan to have more than one to achieve the results you desire. Dr. Fleming and his team of aesthetic experts recommend the optimal number of resurfacing treatments for your specific skin concerns.

How do non-ablative lasers work?

The non-ablative laser safely delivers thermal energy to the deeper levels of your skin through thousands of tiny columns called microthermal treatment zones. The heat from the laser breaks up areas of darker pigmentation, like sun spots or acne scars, and tightens your skin from the inside out. The laser energy stimulates your body’s natural response to heal the tissue by producing new collagen.

As your body produces new collagen, it creates a firmer structure below the surface of your skin, so your face appears tighter and renewed. Since the heat from laser penetrates deeply, the surface of your skin and the surrounding tissue remains unharmed. For several weeks after your non-ablative skin resurfacing treatment, you may notice continued improvement as healthy, tighter skin grows to replace older, wrinkled, damaged skin.
